A leisurely walk. Swaledale is famed for it's Cow'us, or Cow Houses, or even more plainly Barns. Modern farming techniques means that many of these barns are becoming obsolete and starting to deteriorate. While there are schemes to prevent the loss of this distinctive landscape it may not last as we see it today. Take a few days to delight in the scenery whilst stopping off at the local pubs or Tea Rooms.
Initially built as a mountain biking trail this route follows bridleways and in small parts quiet tarmac roads along the Swale from Grinton to Keld via Gunnerside. Originally known as the Corpse Way it follows the old pathways used for generations to bring the deceased to Grinton church for burial. This trail is as good for walking as it is mountain biking. Taking in some beautiful scenery this is a family friendly route both on the bike and on foot.
Everyone loves a good waterfall and Cray has some beauties, especially after rainfall when they seem to sprout up and take over the hillsides. Taking in Buckden Pike it is a spectacular route with fantastic views across Wharfedale.
Although you will touch on more than just the two dales, this is predominantly a tour of Swaledale and Wensleydale. Follow the rugged Swaledale scenery, taking in the historic lead mining scarred Arkengarthdale via 'the world famous' Tan Hill Inn and the Buttertubs Pass, described by Jeremy Clarkson as 'England's only truly spectacular road. Day two takes you into the more rolling hills of Wensleydale. Less rugged but no less spectacular. This is not a thrash around the countryside but at the end of the two days you should have some pleasantly aching legs and a re-vitalised mind.
Taking in the spectacular mining ruins and rugged landscape carved by the historic lead mining industry this scenery is now an area of natural beauty and scheduled historic monuments. Nothing too technical, just pedal and enjoy!
